An Interview With Kim Deister

  1. Where are you from?

Potsdam, NY, but I live on O’ahu in Hawai’i now.

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I ‘ve either in or married to the Army since I was 17. I was a linguist in military intelligence for most of my career, trained in Polish and Vietnamese. I’ve also been a tech writer, a web designer, a translator, and a bunch of other stuff, too. I’m also an Army wife married to the love my life (who will be appearing in uniform on the cover of a future novel) and a mom to four boys.

  1. Tell us your latest news.

I just released my first novel, Kissing Frogs. I’m in the process of finishing up its prequel.

  1. When and why did you begin to write?

I’ve been writing most of my life. It’s always been a bit of an escape for me. I love to read and writing seemed like a natural step!

  1. When did you first consider yourself a writer?

About 5 weeks ago when I released my first novel!

  1. What inspired you to write your first book?

It came from a college assignment, a rom-com short story. My prof loved it and encouraged me to take it all the way.

  1. How did you come up with the title?

There’s a line in the book parodying Katy Perry’s song I Kissed a Girl. My MC also has been through her share of frogs on the way to true love!!

  1. Do you have a specific writing style? Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging?

I don’t think that I do. I love all kinds of genres and tend to write the stories I need to tell, rather than be genre-specific.

  1. How much of the book is real life experiences based on someone you know, or events from your own life?

A lot of it, actually, except for all the magic stuff. But the family dynamics, the bad dates… that’s all me!

  1. Who designs your covers?

Kennedy Kelly is doing the covers for this series.

  1. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Just that love comes at the most unexpected times.

  1. Are there any new authors that have taken your interest? Who is your favourite writer, and what is it about their work that really draws you in?

This is a tough question. I love so many books and authors, so many great stories!

  1. Outside of family members, name one person that supported your commitment to become a published author.

Author Jessi Gibson.  She’s been fantastic!

  1. Do you see writing as a career?

I definitely do!

  1. If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

No, I wouldn’t. The story is what it is and changing it would change its meaning.

  1. Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

Quite a bit. How to be more efficient in the writing process, better ways to promote myself.

  1. If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

Oh, wow!  For my leading lady, Emma Stone. My leading man, Colin O’Donoghue.

  1. Any advice for other writers?

Listen and learn from those who have the experience.

  1. Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

Thank you for taking a chance on me.

  1. What book are you reading now?

How the White Trash Zombie Got Her Groove Back by Diana Rowland.

  1. Do you remember the first book you read?

Little House on the Prairie

  1. What makes you laugh/ cry?

Laugh… pretty much anything.  Good comedy, a good pun.  Cry… pain, injustice, others’ sadness.

  1. Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?

Katherine Hepburn. She was such a pioneer for women!

  1. Do you have any hobbies?

Learning languages (I’m a nerd!), crocheting, art journaling.

  1. What TV shows/ films do you enjoy watching?

I’m addicted to crime shows and action movies!

  1. Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?

Go back to being a linguist because I loved it.

  1. What do you want written on your head stone?

Here lies Kim Deister. She lived life without regret…

  1. Do you have a blog or website readers can visit for updates?
